Over 140 rare photos demonstrating the originality and strength of Weston’s work, from the first experiments with Modernism around 1920 up until the last works completed in 1948 are on show at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC.

Described as “the American photographer par excellence of his time”, Weston is well known for his still life work of peppers and shells, his heroic portraits and his close ups of nudes, rocks and trees. More than just a great photographer, Weston was a modernist experimenter, whose work was developed in the wake of the great movements in contemporary art, in particular those in painting and sculpture. An artist more than a photographer he was however deeply committed to his expressive medium and to using it at its best.

To highlight his contribution to avant-garde styles, the American exhibition sees Weston’s photographs placed alongside a selected number of works by artists with whom the photographer came into contact.
