Opened at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of the World Cultures) in Berlin, the show "The Short Century. Independence and Liberation Movements in Africa 1945-1994", curated by Okwui Enwezor, artistic director of the next Documenta 11. The exhibit retraces historical and cultural events in Africa during a crucial forty-year span, from the end of colonialism to the abolition of apartheid in South Africa.
In the interdisciplinary view chosen by the curator, beside documents and original testimony that reconstruct those events are placed African artists' works belonging to the main contemporary artistic movements, especially Egyptian and South African, that reflect the great political and social changes of the twentieth century. A great deal of space is reserved for the section dedicated to urbanism and architecture, disciplines considered harbingers of a message of new and collective self-awareness by the young African republics. Until July 29.
