Design firm: Students from IAAC, Master's program in Ecological Architecture and Advanced Construction
Project name: Forestone Cabin
Location: MónNatura Pirineu, Planes de Son, Spain
Dimensions: 20 sqm
Located in the heart of the Pyrenees, this experimental tiny house looks like a rocky block embedded in the ground. The Forestone Cabin continues the tradition of self-sufficient micro-architecture, which today is increasingly focused on ecological responsibility. The cabin designed by IAAC students offers a housing model that can be replicated in forest environments, thanks to one key feature: it is built using modular elements assembled dry (by the students themselves) and materials sourced locally. But the project’s most experimental gesture lies in its exterior façades, made from pine boards that have been literally charred. This uses a Japanese technique called Yakisugi, which protects the structure from weather, natural organisms, and—naturally—from fire itself.
