Despite being listed as a heritage building, the AKM was deemed obsolete and beyond repair after more than a decade of uncertainty and inactivity and will now be rebuilt and expanded.

Construction and destruction of Taksim Square
With the construction of the Gezi esplanade on the barracks ground, Taksim started to acquire it open spatial character. The massive plinth, designed for a statue to Atatürk’s successor İnönü is visible in the park. It laid empty after the victory of the Democratic Party in the first multiparty election in 1950, and was eventually removed. Courtesy SALT Research Archive.
The Artillery Barracks have not yet been demolished; in front of them, the horse barn has been remodeled to fit the round square, centred on the Republic monument. On the left, Talimhane – the military parade ground – is being filled up with construction. Courtesy SALT Research Archive.
The monolithic Intercontinental Hotel rose over Taksim in the 70s. In 1977, on what came to be known as the Bloody May 1st, snipers positioned on the hotel’s roof and on another building opened fire on the crowd rallying in the square. Dozens were killed in the ensuing mayhem. Courtesy of SALT Research Archive.
