Pillars of Dreams is a cloud-like pavilion located in the plaza of the Valerie C. Woodard Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. Designed by Marc Fornes/Theverymany, the structure seems light and filled with air, but it is actually an ultra-thin, self-supporting aluminum surface sustained by nine hollow columns.
The pavilion is made of two layers which produce narrow and large openings on the metalic skin letting light pass through. Luminous patterns and shadows run in the space under the canopy, where people can walk or seat, creating a relaxing atmosphere. The colors on the inside, covering the inner layer of the structure, emerge on the white exterior face.
