A multifaceted roof revitalises a Basque village square

The project by the Spanish studio AZAB gives new character to a public space in Mallabia and enables the use of an existing auditorium for all generations.

A new wooden roof changes the meaning of an old auditorium and revitalises a square in the historic centre of Mallabia, a small rural village in the Basque Country. The contemporary intervention, strongly desired by the community, creates a covered public space that allows different uses, for all age groups.

The multifaceted roof designed by the Spanish studio AZAB is not only a functional but also an iconic element, which confronts and contrasts with the historical landscape of the village. The steps of the auditorium have been covered with the same wood used for the roof structure and inclined planes have been created for climbing and playing.
