Cloud over box

The private residence with doctor’ surgery designed in 1935 by Luis Plattner for doctor Roland Köllensperger and his family, shortly after completion had already acquired a somewhat ungracious nickname – the box. When it was refurbished in the 1970s, a pavilion roof was added to ‘the box’. Today, 35 years on, the building now contains two dwellings. Eliminating the pavilion roof, the Einzigart studio decided to bring the ‘box’ back to its original state and add another floor to what was a single family dwelling.

When it was refurbished in the 1970s, a pavilion roof was added to ‘the box’. Today, 35 years on, the building now contains two dwellings. Eliminating the pavilion roof, the Einzigart studio decided to bring the ‘box’ back to its original state and add another floor to what was a single family dwelling. Making a strong impact, the additional cube – a wood construction made from prefabricated elements and low in energy consumption (CasaClima B’) – is clearly distinguished from the existing. Access is separate and via an external spiral staircase that leads to a terrace with an organic shape, similar to a ship’s bridge, an ideal place from which to admire the view of the Catinaccio and the Oltradige. The considerable cantilevers of the balconies and the steel roof are practically independent from the timber construction, whilst the building envelope – floor, walls and roof – is clad in a smooth synthetic material that reveals the architects’ passion for fabrics. The overall effect is of a cloud suspended above the box.
