Serpentine Gallery Pavilion
After Niemeyer, Ito, Libeskind and Hadid (and whilst the Dutch group MVRDV finish off their design begun last year), it is now the turn of Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Mura. These two leading Portuguese architects have designed the new pavilion at the Serpentine, a temporary structure built every year in the middle of Kensington gardens that throughout the summer hosts initiatives organised by the London art gallery. A cafe and resting place during the day, during the evening the pavilion is used for talks, presentations and parties. It has been described by Siza as resembling “a restless creature like an animal whose legs are firmly attached to the ground but whose body is tense from hunger with an arched back and taut skin”.
