A strong symbol, particularly in an urban context such as that of Guadalajara that extends for the most part horizontally, for a building designed to become a city icon. The scheme by Enrique Norten, Mexican leader of the New York based practice, was favoured by the jury also for another two reasons; the amount of exhibition space it offered, even more than the brief requested, and the flexible nature of the spaces that can be adapted to suit various kind of events.
The building work – planned to be complete by 2010 – now depends on raising the necessary funds, 150 million dollars. The hope is to repeat the Bilbao effect, in which the Basque city, emerging from a decade of industrial decline, managed to regenerate its economy through tourism, thanks to the new museum by Gehry. An idea that the Foundation had already attempted to put into action, up until now without success. In Rio de Janeiro a project by Jean Nouvel didn’t take off due to political and financial issues, whilst in Taichung Zaha Hadid’s project is at a standstill, awaiting promised funding. E.S.
