Container for living by LOT-EK

Transform a shipping container into a living space, fully equipped and transportable was the challenge set by the University of Santa Barbara in California together with the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, to the New York based architecture team, Giuseppe Lignano and Ada Tolla, alias LOT-EK. The result of their work, along with the preliminary studies carried out, is now on show at the University Art Museum at Santa Barbara.

The basic idea is simple – a series of sub-volumes which expand as required each of which is dedicated to a specific function for living and working. A central computer controls various functions – the emission of air to expand the volumes, temperature, lighting and communications (monitor, microphones and loudspeakers) distributed around the container. The mini house can be transported by cargo ship or lorry.
