Mali mosques photographed by Sebastian Schutyser

Symbols of small rural villages, the extraordinary mosques of Mali are the obsession of young Belgian photographer Sebastian Schutyser. Thanks to his patient and adventurous work – over the course of a year in a boat and on a bicycle along the Niger in the heart of one of the most fascinating areas of Africa – we have the chance to discover architecture surprising for its variety and paradoxical modernity, mostly unknown to the Western world.

The exhibition at the Museum of Architecture in Frankfurt consists of around thirty large black and white prints that highlight the beauty of this sculpture-architecture, created thanks to the skilled craftsmanship handed down from generation to generation right up until the present day. Ranging from the larger structures such as those in Timbuktu and Djenné, protected by Unesco to the myriad of smaller constructions that without Schutyser’s images would remain unknown.
