Carlo Scarpa: craftsman of architecture

“Things reveal themselves to me only when I draw them”. This highly pragmatic approach to designing is that of Carlo Scarpa (1906-1978) who is the subject of an exhibition opening at the MAK in Vienna (until 14 September).

The exhibition highlights the two foundations of his work: careful design of a high conceptual level, always accompanied though by a strong knowledge of craftsmanship.

It is the collaboration, almost symbiotic, established with the workshop of Saverio Anfodillo, a Venetian family of cabinet makers specialised in the use of wood and metal, which reveals the calibrated alchemy and obsessive attention to detail present in the major projects of the Venetian architect: from the Museo di Castelvecchio in Verona to the tomb for the Brion family in San Vito di Altivole (Asolo).
