Madrid, the CaixaFórum by Herzog & de Meuron

Following the example of the CaixaFórum in Barcelona, which has established itself in a twentieth century modernist building, also the Madrid site for the cultural centre is about to give the go ahead to convert a building, in this case an old electric power station. The project has been designed by Swiss team Jacques Herzog & Pierre de Meuron who were appointed at the end of 2001 and presented the final scheme just a few days ago.

It is one of the Spanish capital’s most long awaited projects, both for its central location – near the Prado and opposite the botanical gardens – and its characteristics – a new building covering 8000 square metres with an adjoining public piazza of 2500 square metres.

The main body of the building is to be raised, underneath will be a covered square, as if it were a kind of “artificial landscape”, which contains the entrance to the temporary exhibition space (2000 square metres) and auditorium (322 seats).

Work is due to begin this year to be concluded by the start of 2006
