Graz 2003: culture and architecture

Graz, the Austrian city in the province of Styria never seems to make it into the limelight; forever by the stronger lights of the capital, Vienna; the splendours of Saltzburg, home town to Mozart and the sporting centre of Innsbruck. In 2003 however all this could change: Graz will be for the whole year European city of culture, the first Austrian city to take on this role. In view of the event, much preparation is underway and many new buildings are on site. For example? The new “Stadthalle”, a multi purpose building designed by Klaus Kada: 12,300 square metres of space dedicated to music, art, culture, television, sporting events, conferences, trade fairs and exhibitions, the official opening of which is due to take place in October this year.

“Mumuth” (which stands for the new House for Music and Musical Theatre) is instead the project designed by Dutch practice Ben van Berkel winner of a competition set in 1998: “The Idea is of spirals, as an organic element. A continuous line absorbs and regulates intervals and interruptions, changes their directions and their scale, without losing their continuity”, explain the designers. It is a space to be dedicated for music of all kinds, home of the chamber orchestra and choir but which will also host concerts and operas.

Other projects include the conversion of the old house of culture into the more modern “Literaturhaus” designed by Florian Riegler and Roger Riewe which should be ready by March 2003. The long awaited “Kunsthaus” which will hold the city collection of modern art will open in September 2003 and is being designed by British team Peter Cook and Colin Fournier.

The most spectacular and ambitious project however probably has to be that by New York artist Vito Acconci “Island in the Mur”: a floating platform able to hold up to 300 people. It is shaped like an enormous shell which emerges for three storeys from the water of the Mur river. Its official opening is planned for January 2003.
