Situated close to another two important museums, the Altre and the Neue Pinakothek, the new museum designed by German architect Stephan Braunfels brings together in 12 000 square metres of floorspace, four different collections which, in line with the intentions of the curators, will maintain their own distinct identity whilst at the same time creating the possibility to create interdisciplinary initiatives. 400 thousand works on paper by artists from the past – from Leonardo to Cezanne – as well as modernists - Beckmann, Kandinsky, Klee, Magritte and Picasso – leading artists of the twentieth century – such as Bacon, Baselitz, Beuys, Judd and Warhol – and contemporary – Pipilotti Rist and Jeff Wall as well as others.
The architecture and design collections are no less important; the first comes from the museum of the city’s Technical University: 350 000 drawings, 100 000 photographic images and 500 models, from Balthasar Neumann to Erich Mendelsohn, Le Corbusier and Shigeru Ban.
Over 50 000 objects make up the collection of applied arts, from the industrial revolution to Bauhaus with ‘incursions’ amongst the classics of design from the twentieth and twenty first century – Eames, Arad, Lovegrove, Maeda, Colani and Noguchi.
