Controversy for Paris apartments by Herzog & de Meuron

Controversy surrounds two big names in contemporary architecture, Swiss team Herzog & de Meuron, winners of the Pritzker Prize and designers of the Tate Modern in London. Their building in rue des Suisses in Paris was completed at the end of 2001 and the magazine Le Moniteur awarded it the équerre d’argent, declaring it to be the best building of the year.

But as everyone knows, in architecture the approval that really counts is that which comes from the daily users. In this case though, the inhabitants, those actually living in the 57 social dwellings of the XIV arrondissement, have difficulty in accepting it. To the extent that they have set up a petition for which they are collecting as many signatures as possible, requesting intervention.

Reporting this ‘minor’ controversy is the French daily Le Monde, who report that a particular aspect under attack is that of the black metal shutters – described by the tenants and neighbours as making the apartments feel like a prison. So what do they want? A nice coat of paint, this time in white.
