CAT, a tower for contemporary art in Vienna

The idea of changing an ungainly presence, both from a physical point of view and psychological, which is also indestructible, into an innovative centre for contemporary art. CAT (Contemporary Art Tower) has been taken up by Peter Noever, Sepp Müller and Michael Embacher with a project to transform one of the anti-aircraft towers, built in Vienna during the Second World War and now a memorial (Gefechtsturm Arenbergpark), into a laboratory of art.

The intention is also to use an innovative approach to commissioning work and towards the artists themselves, who include Jenny Holzer and James Turrell. The exhibition “Heaven’s Gift” – realised by MAK in Vienna and previously shown in New York, Los Angeles and Moscow – now comes to the Vitra in Berlin with a 1:50 scale model and drawings of the project and will conclude its tour in Vienna in February.
