Modern Trains and Splendid Stations
Taking a look at railway station architecture and train design is an exhibition which opens 8 December at the Art Institute in Chicago. It focuses on (and compares) the various different approaches which over the last ten years have been established more or less all over the world. A symbol of the strength of the industrial revolution in the twentieth century, the railways suffered something of a decline with the growth of air travel. Up until the 1980s and 90s that is, when they had something of a come back – which is still taking place – with technological innovations and new possibilities, most of them pursuing the notion of high speed.
The exhibition – which has been designed by David Childs of the practice Skidmore Owings and Merrill, who worked on the New Pennsylvania Station in New York – presents a series of drawings, models, renderings and photographs of the most innovative and interesting international projects.
