Stitching Wood: Lissoni’s Latest Creation

  • Sponsored content

Part of Listone Giordano’s Natural Genius collection, Nui is a series inspired by an ancient Japanese technique.

In Japan, there is an ancient craft that joins wooden elements without the use of nails or glue. Known as Sashimono, the term literally means “things joined together.” It is this fascinating tradition that inspired Piero Lissoni in his latest project for Listone Giordano, unveiled during Milan Design Week. The result is Nui — a product that will become part of the Natural Genius collection, where renowned designers reinterpret wooden surfaces, transforming them into true design elements capable of enhancing and furnishing contemporary living spaces.

Piero Lissoni’s intervention is a measured gesture — one that transforms simplicity into something unique, destined to endure and continue to captivate over time. The collection stands as an ode to connection, closeness, and human bonds. Hence the name Nui, which in Japanese means “to sew.” This idea of “stitching” becomes a distinctive aesthetic feature — striking in its purity and elegance, transcending trends to emerge as a timeless decorative solution.

I conceived this joinery as if these trees I place on the floor were becoming furniture.

A continuous dialogue between culture, research, and technique: this is the distinctive hallmark of Listone Giordano’s philosophy, which over the years has redefined the archetypal forms of wooden flooring, transforming it into a true design language.

“This project stems,” says Lissoni, “from the idea of the beauty and dignity of these large wooden planks, which evoke what they once were — trees. I thought of this joinery as if these trees, once placed on the floor, were becoming furniture.” This enthusiasm is shared by Andrea Margaritelli, Brand Manager of Listone Giordano, who adds: “We are delighted to welcome Piero Lissoni into the world of Natural Genius, where the creative force of nature meets the ever-surprising energy of human creativity.”

Nui is offered in two variations, Nui 01 and Nui 02, each designed to create a distinct visual experience. Nui 01 uses a head-to-tail joining system, resulting in an orderly composition with perfectly aligned ends. Nui 02, on the other hand, employs a head-to-head joinery that produces a sophisticated staggered pattern, maintaining the elegance of alignment but with a more dynamic visual rhythm.

Both versions are available in Rovere Civita, the iconic color of Listone Giordano, in Rovere Grisaglie, and in Ash with the innovative Graphit finish. The latter is part of the Circular project, which applies the principles of the circular economy to wood, repurposing graphite dust — a byproduct of industry — to create a new, sustainable, and striking surface.
