Founded in 1965 in Matera, Calia Italia is now one of the most recognized Italian companies in the upholstery industry.
Some companies are deeply rooted in their place of origin, and Calia Italia is one of them. Born as a craft workshop from an idea by Liborio Vincenzo Calia, the company celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, confirming itself as a reality capable of blending tradition and innovation, local identity and global reach, culture and industry.
Deeply embedded in the Lucanian territory, Calia Italia has brought to over 80 countries not only the quality of Italian design, but also the human and cultural values of its land. This bond is visible in the names of products inspired by local traditions, in the decision to keep more than 70% of employees from Matera, and in the "Calia Italia Cultura" program, active since the 1990s to support social and cultural projects.
Now led by the founder’s sons, Saverio and Giuseppe Calia, together with the third generation, the company pursues a vision of business as a generator of collective value: not just a production site, but a space that creates economic, social, and cultural wealth.
At the heart of the company’s philosophy lies the importance of the project: “The word ‘design’ is overused,” says art director Saverio Calia. “What really matters is the project in its deeper meaning: the act of creating the future, of thinking about something for someone.”
In fact, every Calia Italia product is created to meet the most authentic needs of contemporary living.
A guiding principle is comfort—not only as technical quality, but as a human value. Their furniture is designed to respond to the evolving ways of living and to people’s deepest needs, such as the desire for refuge, protection, and intimacy. Examples include the new version of Choco Magic, a modern reinterpretation of an iconic 1980s piece; the romantic Giuggiola armchair, inspired by traditional hairstyles of Matera; and the Vivì armchair, a true “silence capsule” made with sound-absorbing materials derived from industrial waste.
Since 2022, the company has embarked on a significant transition toward greater sustainability awareness, introducing smart automation, photovoltaic systems, LED lighting, and technologies to reduce waste. This innovation does not replace human labor but rather enhances it, recognizing human capital as the beating heart of the company. It’s an ethical approach that ensures quality, expertise, and a strong sense of belonging.
Registered in the Special Register of Historic Trademarks of National Interest, Calia Italia today stands as a concrete example of how industry, culture, and social responsibility can be successfully combined. Its goal remains unchanged: to make people feel good, by creating beautiful, functional, and meaningful objects. A vision deeply rooted in the past, yet looking forward with coherence—always with Matera at the center of its creative horizon.
