Corian® Solid Surface enhances bright spaces

The Upper Eastside Berlin project integrates elements of Corian® Solid Surface, in the colour Glacier White, for wall and bathroom coverings, and even for some structural elements.

What would happen if we cut out a piece of the Upper Eastside, a famous neighbourhood in New York, and implanted it in the heart of Berlin? This is the provocation from which "Upper Eastside Berlin" was born, a building complex located on the corner of Friedrichstrasse and Unter den Linden, in one of the most elegant and prestigious areas of the German capital. The architectural project, at the same time elegant and imposing, has eleven floors and features shops on the ground floor, large offices on the intermediate floors and luxury flats on the top two levels.

A team of architects led by Annette Axthelm won the competition for the design of the first eight flats. The design challenge was to create spacious and flexible living spaces while reducing dark areas. The architects mainly played with the use of light, brightness, perspective and versatility of the floor plan, incorporating large doors that rotate and slide to open and connect almost all spaces. To maintain a bright and seamless design, the doors in the bathrooms, as well as all the bathroom furniture itself, were executed with a maximum of white tones and a seamless design.

Architect Annette Axthelm chose Corian® Solid Surface, in the colour Glacier White, for the wall and bathroom coverings, and even for some structural elements. For the implementation of this exclusive assignment, Axthelm relied on the team of collaborators with whom she had previously worked on her other major projects and who had always produced top-notch results. The main contract was awarded to interior fitter Flömö from Falkenau, who took care of both furniture production and installation. The HASENKOPF laboratory - a qualified Corian® Quality Network Partner - provided all its expertise in working with the Corian® Solid Surface material and was involved in planning and consulting to provide specific solutions in the most complex environments such as kitchens and bathrooms. The integration of the Corian® Solid Surface elements was carried out by HASENKOPF in close collaboration with the architects and interior designer.

Despite the existence of different materials and suppliers on the market from which to choose in order to create seamless objects and surfaces, the problem of being able to guarantee the quality of the installed solutions over time became clear from the outset. "However, thanks to the consistent use of Corian® Solid Surface and the advice of material expert HASENKOPF - a qualified Corian® Quality Network Partner - we were able to achieve thermoformed curves, flawless and seamless finishes, perfectly integrated with the other materials chosen for the different environments. This ensured the complete satisfaction of the builder, the owners and the architects involved in the project, ensuring maximum colour consistency and guaranteeing the durability of the flats," said Annette Axthelm.
