A pavilion at Salone reveals the circularity of wood

At Salone del Mobile 2023, the installation "Wood You Believe?", designed by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota, celebrates the 60th anniversary of Gruppo Saviola, a leading company in the field of circularity and sustainability of wooden furniture.

Wood recycling in Italy is a virtuous example of circular economy. Research conducted by the Milan Polytechnic between 2019 and 2020 estimated that this supply chain, added to the regeneration chain, generates an economic impact of 2 billion euros, over 10,000 direct jobs, and a saving in CO2 consumption of almost 2 million tonnes.

Gruppo Saviola was ahead of its time when it first converted its production to ecological panels with recycled wood in the 1990s and today is the industry benchmark for sustainability and design.

In the year of its 60th anniversary celebration, Gruppo Saviola is participating for the first time in the Salone del Mobile with a pavilion that materialises its commitment to sustainability and imagines future scenarios in interior design. Designed by CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and Italo Rota, the installation "Wood You Believe?" will be on display at the Milan Fairgrounds (Hall 10, C04) between 18 and 23 April 2023.

The facade of the installation is made of four tonnes of waste material to show the entire transformation process of post-consumer wood. Inside, you can find an immersive room that highlights the full potential of digital printing in the realisation of impactful and sustainable custom-made projects.

The aim is to recall what can be seen in a wood recycling plant. This three-dimensional collage serves to illustrate the amount of waste produced by the furniture industry. By reintegrating everyday objects into our living spaces, design respects the principles of the circular economy to extend their life cycle and functionality beyond what is expected.

The interior space of the pavilion accentuates the use of advanced manufacturing technologies for the production of customised panels. Passing through a portal reminiscent of the effect of steel, visitors are ushered into an immersive space constructed from over one hundred 'Eco Panel' panels made from 100 per cent recycled wood.
