Switch: showers combine lifestyle, innovation and sustainability

Improving the experience of daily actions, using resources and materials responsibly, giving a central role to customisation: from these needs comes the Switch shower system by Fima Carlo Frattini.

Before French doctor Merry Delabost conceived and built the first modern shower for military use, an Englishman, William Feetham, had a brilliant and intuitive intuition, which he patented in 1767.

His shower, a "cage" with a wooden structure, had a ceiling tank and a chain with which to release water. This system was not yet fully mechanised, as the tank had to be filled by hand, usually by servants, but it can be considered the mother of the shower we all use. In the following centuries the instrument proliferated also in domestic environments, first for the wealthy few and then in all homes, thanks above all to technological and plant engineering innovations.

Nowadays, the concept of an open shower is becoming more and more widespread: no longer a box to be inserted in the bathroom, but an area with almost undefined boundaries, offering a free and immersive experience. The only signs that identify the shower are the controls, the drain and the showerhead, which thus become decisive design elements both in terms of aesthetics and functionality of the space.

From this new vision derives Switch, a shower system that combines innovation, sustainability and aesthetics, born from the collaboration between the designer Davide Vercelli and the Italian company Fima Carlo Frattini. A great novelty of Switch is the possibility to operate the water flows with a simple press of a round touch button, controlling them at the same outlet.

Fima Carlo Frattini changes substantially the world of the shower: unlike the existing systems – in which only from the position of temperature and flow regulation it is possible to operate the various utilities through the diverters – Switch makes the relative outlet correspond to the button pressed. This means a great freedom of composition, choosing where to place the hand shower, Kneipp hose, side jets, wall outlet and on/off button.

For each outlet it is possible to preset the amount of water output by adjusting the flow rate with control knobs. Great attention has also been paid to the ergonomic component of the product: the design of the two temperature and flow control knobs is careful and intuitive. The side surface of the knobs is worked with a wide knurling that allows a possible lateral grip.

Eco-sustainability is obviously at the heart of Davide Vercelli's project. The shower system is designed to "educate" to a more responsible use of water, inviting to use a flow rate that meets daily needs and at the same time guarantees water saving.

The Switch system is available in three versions: built-in, shelf and column. In the first version, the components can be installed in the standard layout, thanks to a recessed wall rail that can be purchased separately, or they can be freely distributed inside the shower to form a custom-made configuration.

Both the shelf and column versions feature a two-outlet spout body, which contains the controls on the front and offers a practical support surface. The column version is particularly suitable for renovations, because with an elegant and minimalist external hose, it connects the dispenser body to the shower head.
