From the encounter between the eclectic creativity of Marcel Wanders and Laufen comes The New Classic, a collection of bathroom fittings and furnishings that was awarded with the iF Design Award 2019 for its sensual combination of form and function.

The Dutch designer interprets the classic bathroom in a contemporary way. He conceives it as an integrated concept, combining different but complementary shapes and colours. The soft, generous lines of sanitary ware and accessories, designed with the innovative ceramic material SaphirKeramik, contrast with the rigorous geometries of the interior design.

"For the first time the SaphirKeramik ceramic material was used to create very classic and iconographic shapes. However, we discovered that this hygienic, highly wear-resistant and recyclable material offers us a unique opportunity to celebrate the beauty of thin ceramics through the sinuous and elegant shapes of our pieces," says Marcel Wanders. 

The innovative material, which is the result of Laufen's technological research, has the same strength and workability characteristics as traditional ceramics, but with much thinner profiles. The products in The New Classic collection are therefore extremely light and slim, but at the same time resistant and sustainable. The reduction in thickness leads to a lower quantity of materials used and also allows a significant reduction in environmental impact and savings during production.

The washbasin configurations are adapted to both classic and contemporary tastes. The countertop washbasin with integrated shelf is available in different widths - 600, 800 and 1200 mm - and includes a small hand-rinse basin 500 mm wide as well as a 550 mm wide basin. With its important dimensions - 1900 x 900 x 580 mm - the bathtub is an almost sculptural element, with classic and refined shapes, that inspires the whole collection and is able to characterize the whole environment. The collection also includes wall-mounted bidets and brimless vases for easy maintenance. The WCs are available with both wall-hung and floor-standing toilet and flushing cistern.

The taps of The New Classic collection are characterised by a sober and linear design, which creates a contrast with the soft and delicately curved lines of ceramic sanitary ware. 

The furnishings designed by Marcel Wanders accompany the delicate curves of the sanitary fittings. They have no handles and have a clean, square design, with a classic and modern taste, in harmony with the entire collection. The New Classic collection is completed by a series of accessories in SaphirKeramik, characterized by the same sinuous lines as the sanitary fixtures: besides shelves, soap dish, toothbrush holder and bathroom brush, all mounted on the wall, there is also an oval mirror with integrated lighting.
