When in 1648 the Peace of Westphalia sanctioned the new state order, it ended the history of the medieval city in so far as the right of the States took away all its juridicial and military autonomy. This left the problem of the city as a place of streets, buildings and churches. This book is truly remarkable for the range of situaitons and the number of authors examined. It is a shame it does not mention Carlo Cattaneo’s interesting book La città.
