Kia has recently unveiled the Futuron, a concept for a futuristic electric SUV coupe. Its name, says Kia, is a play on the words “future” and “on”, which should hint “at the switched-on, electric nature” of the vehicle. While I don’t have any problem with the retro-futuristic look of the concept, with its fancy and uncomfortable spaceship-like interiors nobody and a shiny body that reminds of an Airstream Silver Bullet trailer, I do have a problem with how lazy and self-descriptive the name is. Despite the naming blunder, the concept is an interesting experiment expressing “a new design interpretation for Kia’s future electric vehicles”, based “around the notion of dynamic purity”. The Futuron made its debut last week at the 2019 China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai, which helps explain some of the design details, such as the Dragon Skin surface covering the lighting area and emulating “the scaled armor that adorns Chinese dragons, both in mythology and modern-day cultural celebrations.”
Kia Futuron is a lazily named electric car from the future
The Korean company designed an interesting concept for an electric SUV, then gave it a name that sounds like the hero’s vehicle in a sci-fi b-movie from the fifties.
