BMW unveils the world's “blackest black car”

A new special edition X6 coupe was sprayed with a special coating that absorbs more than 99% of the light rays that hit the surface of the car.

BMW has unveiled the VBX6, a one-of-a-kind version of the X6 coupe that is quite probably the blackest vehicle ever made. The car has been painted with a special version of Vantablack, a color pigment that absorbs almost all of the light rays that hit it. The VBX6 isn’t coated with the original Vantablack (whose rights of use were acquired by artist Anish Kapoor, in a move that stirred a big controversy): instead BMW used a sprayable version of the pigment developed by Surrey Nano Systems which is slightly more reflective and can can be applied to larger surfaces.  Like any object sprayed with Vantablack, large parts of the VBX6 appear virtually two-dimensional, because the eyes can’t tell its corners and shapes apart and the brain is tricked into seeing an abyss or a void. As Gino Vannelli famously sang, “black car looks better in the shade”. But would that still hold true for a car that’s basically a moving shade itself? You’ll be able to decide it at the Frankfurt Motor Show, where the VBX6 will be on display from 12 to 22 September 2019.
