The Spot, an A.I. toy for kids

The playfool tool leverages artificial intelligence to answer every kid's never-ending flow of "whys”, "whats” and "hows”.

The Spot is a concept for a new handheld device for kids to help them learn about all the things that surround them. The portable toy would come with a wooden handle and includes a camera, a pico-projector and a system software based on artificial intelligence. It could work in a similar way to Lens, the Google feature that lets you retrieve informations about an object just by pointing your smartphone’s camera at it.
When the Spot recognizes an object or an animal, it start a playful narrative about it, to lead kids through story crafted to expand their knowledge. There’s no screen, though: every interaction is conducted via voice, to avoid early exposure to displays and to mimic the way parents would teach their kids and answer the “why”, “how” and “what” that spur from their innate curiosity. The Spot is a concept developed by NewDeal Design, the same folks that developed the Lytro Camera, Google’s Project Ara and the 2016 line of Fitbit’s smart bands.
