Oppo has unvelied the first under-display selfie camera

The Chinese company demonstrated the new technology on a prototype, but it says it will soon debut on a commercial smartphone.

Oppo has been experimenting for a while now with solutions that would make smartphones truly notchless, from last year’s slide-loud camera on its Find X flagship, to this year’s shark fin motorized camera unit featured on the Reno Series. Now the Chinese manufacturer is pioneering yet another promising technology that could hide the front camera under the display. A smartphone prototype featuring the breakthrough design was a real attention grabber at this week’s Mobile World Congress in Shanghai. Oppo’s intention was to showcase the impressive achievement before anyone else. Nonetheless, the company confirmed that a commercial product featuring the under-display camera is already in the works and will hit the market “in the near future”. Oppo has also confirmed that they’re aware of the optical limitations that will affect the first generation of the technology, but they said they’ll be able to overcome almost all of them by means of algorithmic correction, achieving a final image quality of the average selfie camera of mainstream smartphone models.
