Joe Doucet’s anti-terror public seating

“Rely” is a seat and a protective barrier designed for the city that aims to prevent accidents or terrorist attacks. It has been installed in New York City.

Created by designer Joe Doucet, Rely Protective Public Seating is a bench designed for crowded spaces and is composed of 3D-moulded concrete units that can be combined as needed. Mixing design and functionality, Rely contrasts sharply with the classic urban anti-terrorism barriers and wants to offer a space for meeting and resting to be placed in a city context, while maintaining its function of public protection. In Times Square, New York, Rely is already used by people to relax or eat.

The purpose is to have an area that becomes part of the urban landscape without too much impact and that covers its main task through a pleasant form.
Each unit weighs over a ton and it is connected to the others by steel rods, a system that allows the creation of a barrier capable of absorbing collisions and finally stopping a vehicle in case of danger. The components are obtained through digital extrusion, a method never used before on concrete and that makes Rely an object to be studied as a solution to the risks of cities.
