This iPhone cover is inspired by the unforgettable iMac G3

Produced by Spigen, the cover celebrates the first of Jonathan Ive’s great successes for Apple.

Launched in 1998, the iMac G3 represented a turning point in the computing world, and this same design is now returning in the form of a cover for the iPhone. Made by Spigen, it is no coincidence that the Classic C1 is coming out at around the same time that the computer is celebrating its twentieth anniversary. It is undoubtedly an anniversary to be remembered. The G3 was the first to bring colour to the world of computing, transforming classic grey desktop machines into furnishing elements. Compact, made up of a CRT monitor with an elongated case that contained all the components, it set Jonathan Ive on the altar of great technology designers and, thanks to the slogan “Sorry, no beige”, it marked a giant leap forward for computing by linking it to the concept of beauty, just as Dieter Rams had done decades earlier with household appliances.

Now the Classic C1 cover is trying to apply that same touch of innovative aesthetics, but in reverse. In fact colour is now everywhere in the world of mobile devices but tends more often to be in bright or opaque shades. Here, on the contrary, the colours are pastel. The cover has three parts. A silver-coloured shell clips onto the telephone, transforming the smooth back with embossing, which here is obviously only aesthetic, while on the G3 it was necessary for the cooling of the computer and the installation of various components.

Then there is a second section in rubber which is translucent like the shell of the G3, and is, in the same way, characterised by iconic colours which range from turquoise to light blue, white or sage green. Lastly, there is a third piece which is white and represents the contrast in colour between the rear section of the shell and the screen frame. For the moment, Spigen has chosen to produce this cover solely for the iPhone X, the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus which came out in 2017, and not for more recent models.
