What to expect from Lina Ghotmeh’s Serpentine Pavilion 2023

Designed by the Franco-Lebanese architect, the “À table” pavilion is an invitation to sit around a table and share ideas, stories, traditions, and opinions. It will be inaugurated on June 9.

The 22nd London - Serpentine Pavilion will open on Friday 9 June 2023. Designed by Franco-Lebanese architect based in Paris Lina Ghotmeh, the pavilion is titled “À table”, a typical call of the Mediterranean countries to sit together at a table to chat while sharing the meal, and takes inspiration from the cultural heritage of Ghotmeh, made of fervent discussions around the table, on current events, politics, private life, dreams and future.

The interior features a concentric table along the perimeter, which invites you to gather, sit, think, share ideas, worries, joys, dissatisfaction, responsibilities, traditions, histories and memories, celebrating the exchanges that allow you to create new relationships. Offering a moment of conviviality around a table and considering food as an expression of care, the design of the Pavilion also appears as a space of rooting and reflection on our relationship with the earth, nature and the environment, which gives us sustenance.

Artist and composer Tarek Atoui created an original soundscape for the pavilion, starting from Ghotmeh’s sketches and architectural materials, also inspired by his research on rural and classical Arabic music. For the ninth year in a row, Goldman Sachs is supporting the annual project.
