India’s first Apple Stores open in Mumbai and in Delhi

After several delays caused by the Covid pandemic, two highly anticipated stores have opened, with energy-efficient design by Foster + Partners.

Apple’s first retail store in India – “Apple BKC” – just opened its doors inside Jio World Drive, a huge shopping complex in Mumbai, Maharashtra, followed yesterday by a second one in Delhi, “Apple Saket”.

Apple BKC, designed by Foster + Partners, has a dedicated solar array and works 100% renewable energy to power its operations. The building is characterized by a triangular handcrafted wooden ceiling that extends beyond the glass facade. Each tile consists of 408 pieces of wood. All the wooden elements, 450,000, were assembled in Delhi. In addition, upon entering the store, customers are greeted by two stone walls from Rajasthan and a 14-metre-long stainless steel staircase connecting the ground floor to the cantilevered mezzanine.
