Philippe Starck designs a new building in the center of Rome

Together with urban planner Raffaele Giannitelli, the French designer has designed – one of a kind opportunity – a new building for the center of Rome: it will host a luxury hotel.

A few steps from the Tiber, in via Luisa di Savoia, in front of Porta del Popolo and next to the offices designed by Luigi Moretti, Philippe Starck – in collaboration with the local studio Surf Engineering, founded by the urban planner Raffaele Giannitelli – designed the new Brach Hotel, a brand of the French group Evok.

The old construction – a school building of little architectural value, which occupied the lot since the fifties – has been demolished in the past weeks, and in its place the new hotel will be built from scratch, an incredible event for the center of the Italian capital.

The new building will feature a glass and steel structure. On the roof, it will be planted with cypresses and there will be also a large underground pool. The project established a peaceful dialogue with the other Art Nouveau buildings in the area, as well as the typical 1930s “palazzine”, including the one designed by Giuseppe Capponi for the construction company of Pier Luigi Nervi. The works should be completed during the Jubilee of 2025.
