Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco renovated by Foster + Partners

The iconic tower in San Francisco, after two years of decreased activity due to the pandemic, is preparing for the future.

Foster + Partners will restore the iconic Transamerica Pyramid – originally designed by William L. Pereira and Harry D. Som – and adjacent Redwood Park in San Francisco. The London-based firm was chosen for this project by the real estate investor Michael Shvo, who purchased the 48-story skyscraper in 2020.

The building, which was the tallest one in San Francisco until 2018, will keep the name it shares with the insurance company that paid for its construction in 1972, but will receive substantial renovation of its interiors, exteriors and landscape.

The project foresees the expansion of open spaces in the areas at the base of the tower, luxury interiors and a cherry blossom-lined path on an adjacent alley. The penthouse on the 48th floor will be also converted to a private club. Construction on the renovation project is set to begin within the month.
