Illegal building site found inside one of Adolf Loos’ most important buildings

In Wien, in Larochegasse 3, there is a building that marked the birth of Modernism: Scheu House. Built between 1912 and 1913 and designed by the great  Austrian architect Adolf Loos, the house was declared a national monument in 1971.

As in turns out, though, the new owner, Stefan Tweraser, has given way to a massive and illegal renovation, without taking into account the most basic building sector rules. The scandal exploded thanks to Die Presse and then the superintendency has promptly blocked the site.

Unfortunately – as declared by architect and journalist Isabella Marboe, who managed to do an inspection – the work had already begun. Inside the building there were partitions and shower cabins pulled down, dismantled radiators, removed tubes and wooden panels detached from the walls. Some original forniture were disassembled and piled aside.
