In September, two appointments during the Venice Art Biennale will display the public art project by American artist Melissa McGill. 52 traditional Venetian boats armed with lug sails, each dyed in different shades of red, will create a choreography on water in the North Lagoon and in the area between the islands of San Servolo and Poveglia. A fully-fledged entry among the green events of the Sailors for the Sea programme for the protection of the oceans, this work exalts a harmonious relationship between man and his context, enhancing historical heritage, slowness and a docile appropriation of places. As curator Chiara Spangaro declares, “Red Regatta raises the urgency of preserving the balance between the human dimension, the urban landscape and the natural environment.” On the event’s web page it will be possible to identify the best observation points to see the performance.
Melissa McGill dyes in red 52 boats in the Venice Laguna
After the Venice Historical Regatta, it will be the turn of the Red Regatta by New York-based artist Melissa McGill: a choreography on water with traditional boats dressed in red, on 1st and 15th September.
