Smartphone app replaces physical IDs in New York

Mobile ID applies also to driver's licenses. It is the second American state to adopt a digital recognition system, also working in airports.

The State of New York is the second American state to launch the Mobile ID initiative, allowing residents to digitize their driver’s licenses or non-driver’s IDs. Users need to register their phone number, take a photo of their physical document, and verify their identity with a selfie to activate their profile and obtain a convenient and secure method, accessible via an app, to confirm their identity.

Thanks to Mobile ID, designed to protect data privacy and security through encrypted data transmission and selective information sharing, users can, for example, verify their age for online age-restricted purchases without revealing other personal details. The Mobile ID can also be used in many airports. Nevertheless, it is advised to still carry the physical document for now.
