Madrid. Chefslab, a low-budget renovation

Héctor Fernández Elorza rethinks a flagship space with a minimal intervention featuring steel, black paint and reflective insulation.

Chefslab is the result of the client’s idea of gastronomic space, seen as a condenser of events and cooking workshops. The renovation uses a glittering shade of silver to identify the areas where the dynamic activities take place, such as dinners and cooking shows, whereas the servant zones are painted black.

Since the activities that Chefslab hosts are varied, Héctor Fernández Elorza’s intervention allows for a certain flexibility in the space. The plan clearly shows the presence of four fixed elements that are indispensable for the act of cooking: at the entrance, the tubular shelf represents the first element while on the opposite side of the room, a monumental extraction hood dominates the space. As cooking and eating are related to the ritual of washing hands, the sinking pot represents another one of these fixed elements, along with the lightning, designed to follow the constitutive flexibility of this gastronomic space.
