Poetic Autobiography

At Antonia Jannone, twenty-two unseen works, selected by Aldo Rossi’s sons, introduce to a private side strictly linked to his work as architect and theorist of architecture.

Poetic Autobiography
A series of drawings on paper and on board – made between 1974 and 1996 circa – in lead pencil, coloured pencil, pastels, pen, felt tip, ink and watercolour, that depict snapshots of daily life, recall a number of Rossi’s career moments and retrace both his passions and fears.
Coffee makers, watches, vases, a rooster, some other animals, human figures, a letter and a woman in a garden, leading to architectural shapes, direct or imaginary references to real or imaginary projects. From Architetto che pensa ad una villa (“Architect Thinking of a Villa”), where a contemplative self-portrait in the role of architect has a project for American detached houses as a backdrop, to Il Vaso di vetro (“The Glass Vase”), a delicate still life overlaid on a miniature Teatro del Mondo in the background.

Poetic considerations that blend architectural moments with personal biography, such as Familia al Mare (“Family by the Sea”) with the famous beach huts, or the small 1993 Untitled drawing, where the railing overlooking the lake – perhaps the one in his much loved house in Ghiffa? – introduces a peaceful moment in the commotion of a life crammed with travels, meetings, writings, research, planning and construction.

The relationship between Aldo Rossi and Galleria Antonia Jannone began at the end of the seventies, at a time when Rossi was gaining international recognition with the singular compositions of his drawings and prints. On this occasion, and thanks to the collaboration with the Aldo Rossi Foundation, Antonia Jannone explores a more personal and poetic aspect of the architect’s life, invariably composed of things big and small.
