Jongerius e Aalto
Working with Artek for the first time, Hella Jongerius has reinterpreted some classic products by Alvar Aalto.
Working with the 400, 401 armchairs and the 60 stool, Jongerius’s aim was to soften their appearance, creating a palette of tone-on-tone colours with four wood finishes: silver birch, honey, walnut and charcoal. With the introduction of more tactile fabric covers, Jongerius updates the palette of colours from the Aalto archives moving towards a more widespread graphic style.

For the cover of the 400 chair, Jongerius has chosen two fabrics that create a soft, graphic look. Hours is a fabric inspired by sheep and the natural colour variations in their wool through the seasons and in different lighting condition. Borders celebrates the beauty of fabric-edging making reference to an old tradition: small hand-woven bands are embroidered together to create larger fabrics.
For the 401 chair collection, Hella Jongerius has combined structured fabrics to create a colour blocking effect. The combination of two coloured pieces and a third fabric that covers the back, breaks up the long lines of the 401.

For a new ecology of living
