Luzinterruptus: Olympic Games

On the occasion of the International Olympic Committee's recent Madrid visit, in order to evaluate the city as a possible candidate for the organisation of the 2020 Olympic Games, Spanish art collective Luzinterruptus once again took to the streets with an ephemeral light installation. The collective considers that such an event will not bring any economic benefits for citizens: moreover, such an economic investment would be another step into "the abyss of the budget deficit, that is already causing worrying cuts in culture, health, education.”

The protest was held in an abandoned park, supposedly the site of a future Olympic park "For a month, we collected glass bottles, recycled from bars close to our houses," state Luzinterruptus, "until we had about 500 units which we cleaned of labels and carefully prepared, with the intention of giving them the appearance of menacing Molotov cocktails."  

Titled Olympic Games as a strategy for destruction, the installation took place on the night of 18 March. The five Olympic rings were created, each two metres wide, made up of bottles. Each bottle was filled with coloured water and a wick which burned with the warm light of an LED. "And there we left the piece, with the intention that the Olympic visitors would come across it during their inspection tour," conclude the art collective. "We are not sure if we achieved it but after a few days we went to see if it still remained in order to remove it, and there was no sign of it."
