Sake Bomb by Alexander Purcell/APRRO

A compact new entertaining tool available to sake lovers and epicurean enthusiasts everywhere in the form of the Sake Bomb: a cleverly designed ceramic pouring vessel with four matching cups.
The inspiration is a juxtaposition of the Fugu Fish (Blowfish), the most opulent of sashimi cuts and a WW II sea mine. "The name is a comical take on the western slang for the same moniker meaning to drop sake shots in pints of beer".
The ceramic bomb holds 8 fl oz (235ml) of the traditionally Japanese drink and comes with four small beakers, which perch neatly on the spines, making it a compact accessory for any tabletop. It is manufactured in Los Angeles in a variety of vivid colors by traditional kiln methods; the slip cast ceramic decanter keeps hot sake hot and cold sake cold.
To ensure the complexity and geometric nature of the sake bomb remained true, the manufacturing process combines both high-tech modern technologies with traditional handcrafted techniques. The vessels were initially designed in 3D CAD software and master molds printed using a 3D FDM printer. From these plaster molds were taken and traditional slip-casting procedures are employed to create the ceramic Sake Bomb for kiln firing.

Los Angeles based British designer Alexander Purcell is the founder of APRRO, a interdisciplinary design studio, which launched at the ICFF in 2009. Built around the experience and talents of its founder who studied at both Cambridge University in England, UK and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Purcell's vision is to produce innovative design that pushes the boundaries of aesthetics, technology and materials; and re-defines the relationship between designer and manufacturer.
