Inside Outside was selected to design an ‘art wall’. This wall, which is 150 meter long and has an average height of 12 meter, zigzags through the building and separates the foyers from the three music halls. The design, colour and scale of the vinyl wallpaper changes continually, presenting a layered composition of nature, human fi gures and references to music and rhythms. The visual ingredients are manipulated in such a way that atmosphere and meaning shift, creating an abstract timeline between present (pop) and past (classical). Inlayed brush panels create a rhythmic composition of ‘tones’ that reflect the melody of the provincial anthem of Twente; while their vibrating bristles scatter the sound waves that resonate through the building..
For the concert hall Inside Outside was invited to design a red stage curtain. They designed a bright red curtain with a twist. The concept of the stage curtain is influenced by the fabric, a gift from the Ten Cate Factory to the City of Enschede. The material chosen from their collection is commonly used for tents, work clothes and uniforms. As the textile itself can not fulfi l the technical demands of a stage cloth (weight, light- and sound absorption levels) Inside Outside folded the cloth thrice over its entire surface, creating a heavy curtain with a three dimensional structure of blousing squares. The chosen composition is a counter movement to the circular patterns of auditorium and foyers, while the half circular shape from which the structure’s open pleats are released indirectly refers to the same circular patterns. A black and white print of honey suckle is hidden within the folds and pleats of the curtain, only visible with each movement of the stage curtain.
