Design firm: PLNLstudio
Project name: Trommel No. 4
Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands
Size: 60 sqm
In Amsterdam, inside a building designed by SeARCH architects that originally housed the circular concrete tanks of a sewage treatment plant, PLNLstudio has worked on the residual space created by this unconventional geometry, transforming it into a welcoming apartment tailored to the needs of contemporary living. The curvature of the existing tank shapes the bespoke furnishings and determines the functional layout: from the continuous seating that follows the curved line of the wall, to the storage units that integrate into the wall partitions to maximise the available space without compromising its sense of unity. The material palette of smooth concrete floors, wood and reflective stainless steel inserts reinterprets the industrial legacy of the building’s previous use, integrating it with glass partitions and semi-transparent internal openings that diffuse light and lend the rooms an atmosphere of “expansion” beyond their physical borders.
Can a former utility room be converted into an apartment?
Yes, in Amsterdam. With meticulous craftsmanship, Plnlstudio’s adaptive reuse project transforms the unused space of a former wastewater treatment plant into a functional and cozy contemporary apartment.
