An exhibition dedicated to graphic design by Le Corbusier is on at the Museo Pecci in Prato. A perhaps lesser known side to the Swiss architect and urban designer but one to which he dedicated a great deal.
The exhibition, curated by Catherine de Smet, presents in chronological order a complete collection of books by Le Corbusier and the magazine L’Esprit Nouveau, as well as maquettes, sketches and notes drawn from the Le Corbusier foundation in Paris. Emerging from all this is Le Corbusier “man of books”, author of 35 publications that came out between 1912 and 1960 and for which he was responsible for the entire design. From the graphic design of his books to their complete design; format, layout, choice of books and foots, prefaces, appendices and cover.
“Hangings, drawings, paintings, sculptures, books, houses and city plans are none other, as far as I am concerned, than a single and unique manifestation of a stimulating harmony within a new society of machines”, wrote the architect. E.S.
