The new ‘Museo di arte moderna e contemporanea’ in Trento, designed by Mario Botta with Giulio Andreolli, opened to the public on 15 December with the exhibition “Le stanze dell’arte. Figure e immagini del XX secolo”. Established in 1987 from a fusion between the contemporary art section of the Museo provinciale d’arte in Trento with the Galleria Museo Fortunato Depero, Mart has been conceived as a kind of “museum-workshop”, an active building which encompasses both research and education.
Inside the buildings in corso Bettini, in Rovereto, built at a cost of around 50 million euro, is housed a collection whose estimated value is over 100 million euro. “Le Stanze dell’arte”, brings together in 6000 square metres around 300 works which include some of the most famous pieces from the twentieth century – 110 works make up the permanent collection with 195 pieces from 43 collections and museums from Europe and America. The exhibition, curated by the director of Mart, Gabriella Belli, opens with a homage to Giovanni Segantini, a painter from Trento whose “Primavera sulle Alpi” is shown for the first time, and follows on with futurist works by another artist from Trento, Fortunato Depero, along with other work by other exponents such as Balla and Prampolini. The exhibition then continues with work from various schools and artists such as Picasso, Modigliani, Carrà, De Chirico, Savinio, Casorati, Severini, Campigli, De Pisis, Sironi, Morandi, Melotti, Mirò, Weber, Klein, Christo, Wharol, Lichtenstein. The display of twentieth century art covers around thirty rooms.
To the precious Archivio del ‘900, considered the historical foundation of Mart’s collection, is dedicated a small exhibition which alongside the documents shows rare works by Duchamp, Christo, Ontani, Emilio Isgrò, Kosuth.
