An extensive anthology dedicated to the work of photographer Luigi Ghirri (1943-1992), curated by Massimo Mussini together with Paola Borgonzoni Ghirri and Laura Gasparini, can be seen in Rome at the Palazzo Fontana di Trevi opening 3 October and running until 10 November. Twenty years of work by one of the protagonists in the world of international photography make up a highly personal voyage in the discovery of places, landscapes and architecture which were the passion of this photographer from the Emilia region in Italy who died suddenly and prematurely ten years ago.
“Photography isn’t sheer duplication or a chronometer of the eye which stops the physical world”, stated Ghirri, “but a language in which a difference exists, however subtle, between reproduction and interpretation and gives rise to an infinity of imaginary worlds”.
The collection, entitled “Luigi Ghirri. Fotografie 1972-1992” covers his whole career, starting in the early seventies through to the nineties. It includes a total of 600 photographs which come from the Fototeca della Biblioteca Panizzi in Reggio Emila, where the Ghirri’s photographic archive is held.
