The future of Australian interiors

The research The Future of Living by University of Technology Sydney explores a new way of living based on the concepts of sharing and relationship with the environment, eliminating the boundaries between inside and outside.

The Future of Living project, which explores a way of living in the future, was developed by a research carried out by the University of Technology Sydney for Allianz Australia. The concept focuses on the idea of a new kind of sharing, the relationship with the surrounding environment and nature: the result is a space that overcomes the boundaries between inside and outside.

A fluid environment that establishes a possible future domesticity is imagines: plants, furniture, appliances and objects are scattered in the house allowing different combinations depending on the needs. These elements are in particular modules – among others, the Resting Module to relax in a tailor made climate, the Combustion Heating Module, designed to warm and connect people, the Water Collection Module to collect water and store it for the warmest and driest periods. The inhabitants are imagined as a group, a sort of community, that can continuously define and modify the space in which they live, choosing their own climatic and acoustic comfort as well as the degree of intimacy. The prototype, designed for mass production, is conceived as a hut in the bush and as part of a tower in the city, responding in the latter case to the growing demand for accommodation in Australia.

In both cases it consists of an open plan without the traditional facade, an exposed structure with wooden columns, many curtains and dividing panels, some fixed elements such as light enclosures and the kitchen module. The upper floor is used as a terrace and houses a habitable rock that serves as a sauna.
