Five open and interconnected volumes define Ca l’Amo house in Ibiza

Spaces built on an old terrace of the Spanish island chase each other in Marià Castelló’s project and reveal patios, passages and a swimming pool.

Designed by Marià Castelló, Ca l’Amo house is located in the Sant Mateu plain in Ibiza, in a terraced area made up of stone walls once used for agriculture. The project occupies a plot of 42,385 square meters characterized by a forest of pine and juniper trees, which completely immerses the house in the nature of the island.

Ca l’Amo was built using the last of the terraces, a pre-existence that influenced the program: the house consists of five distinct volumes, parallelepipeds placed at different distances that create functional spaces used as passage, service and connection with the outside, able to ensure the right ventilation.

The first two volumes include the sleeping area with bedrooms and bathrooms; the third volume, the largest in width, is intended for the living area and combines living and kitchen in an open space; open on two sides and designed as a patio, the fourth block acts as a filter with the outside and overlooks the courtyard and the pool, positioned perpendicular to the volumes of the house. Finally, the last block is a guest annex with a bedroom and an outside area.

The structure is made of counter-laminated wood panels – left visible inside and painted white along the walls – and built through a dry construction system, while natural limestone covers the floors and the area around the pool. The numerous openings constitute a natural ventilation system and the house is equipped with a cistern to collect rainwater to be reused.
